Our celebration of our newest exhibit the 100th running of the 500 kicked off on Thursday, June 9, with two hours of amazing people and cars at a special preview party! Hundreds of our museum members and special friends stopped by, excited and eager to take a sneak peek at Word of Speed’s newest exhibit, Heroes and History. West coast drapes covered the Indy cars, which were waiting to be unveiled and show their colors for all to see. The gallery was abuzz with energy and excitement as our guests walked through the main doors and enjoyed amazing food and drink as part of the celebration. Guests were also able to strike a pose in the Sunshine Dairy Victory Lane wall. This unique photo opportunity allows guests to dress in full racing uniform, adorn themselves with a winner’s wreath, and “drink” a bottle of milk--which has been the beverage of choice for Indy winners for decades.
The room grew quiet as World of Speed Executive Director, David Schaeffer, took the stage and thanked our sponsors and welcomed our members, students and volunteers, who through their support and partnership have helped make World of Speed a pre-eminent museum in the region. Schaeffer then introduced curator Ron Huegli who shared how his vision of Heroes and History became a reality, providing insight into the new exhibit, which showcases amazing memorabilia, our very own starting grid of over 30 cars, and highlights 9 different decades of “America’s Race.” Huegli recognized World of Speed founders Dave and Sally Bany who made his vision a reality through their leadership and constant support. Huegli also spoke about the incredible generosity of the racing community and thanked all who made this exhibit possible. Emotions ran high as our curator finalized his remarks which led to Dave Schaeffer taking the stage once more inviting our community to the unveiling of the cars. As the Jim Neighbors’ version of “Back Home Again in Indiana” filled the room, the black cloaks were removed and the Indy cars emerged, signaling the official opening of World of Speed's newest exhibit, Heroes and History, for all to enjoy.
