Summer Camp Instructor (Download PDF)

A unique opportunity to work with the Education department to develop, implement, and co-teach our 2019 Summer Camp program. Located in Wilsonville, Oregon, World of Speed is an educational motorsports museum using historic racecars, land speed vehicles and motorcycles to tell the story of America’s motorsports culture and leadership role in the world. It encompasses many aspects of motorsports including drag racing and road racing, land speed racing, motorcycle racing as well as open wheel and NASCAR.

The Summer Camp Instructor helps to develop, implement, and co-teaches various camp themes including Tech camp, Engineering, Girls Rule!, Racing 101, and more. This is a great opportunity for someone with teaching experience, in a formal or informal setting, has a passion for motorsports, STEM/STEAM education, and wants to create a positive experience for campers in 3rd-8th and 9-12th grades.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare lesson plans and materials and deliver instruction to groups of up to 12 campers

  • Make adjustments to curriculum as needed to improve the camper experience or accommodate individual campers and submit revised curriculum at the end of camp

  • Develop and/or refine curriculum for class(es) for appropriate age or grade levels

  • Assist in managing supply list, monitoring supply use during classes, and evaluating inventory at the end of classes

  • Provide leadership, energy and camp spirit, constantly assessing group dynamics and the needs of individual campers

  • Support camper check-in and check-out processes

  • Provide excellent customer service to families by communicating with them on a daily basis about their camper’s experience

  • Assist with daily set up and cleanup of camp

  • Set clear and consistent expectations for camper behavior and accountability

  • Partner with administrative team to promptly communicate and follow incident/emergency protocols

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: A minimum of 2 years college experience or equivalent work experience preferred

  • Experience: Minimum 1 year of experience in camp or youth leadership. Prior experience in classroom, experiential, or informal education preferred.

  • License: Must possess a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

  • Competent planning and organizational skills –able to demonstrate ability to effectively prioritize and plan work activities using time efficiently and develop realistic action plans.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work with a variety of people, including staff, campers of all ages, parents, and volunteers.

  • Ability to make solid decisions quickly under pressure and comfortable leading and directing campers respectfully and professionally.

  • Ages and stages experience with children ages 8-13 and 14-18

  • Knowledge of automobiles, motorsports, and/or STEM/STEAM subjects preferred

  • Basic working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite

  • Must be available from June 17th to August 23rd

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to stand and/or walk up to 75% of the day

  • Ability to lift up to 30lbs

  • Hours and days of work may vary

  • Some evenings and weekends may be required

  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age

  • Must be able to successfully pass criminal background check
