Remembering JL "Pappy" Skeans and the Original Slo Poks.
The explosion in popularity of "car culture" during the mid-20th century was due, in part, to the rise of car clubs and racing associations around the country. One of the most prominent drag and hot rod clubs in the Pacific Northwest was the Slo Poks, founded in 1952.
JL "Pappy" Skeans was one of the earliest members of the Slo Poks. His son, David Skeans, shared some memories of his father and the Slo Poks' early days. World of Speed is honored to care for Pappy Skeans' club jacket, a rare piece of local racing history.
There's a story or two behind every item in our museum. Thank you so much to David Skeans for sharing his!
